Welcome to #MadeItMonday, where I post something I’ve made in the previous week, and where you can join in and post something you made too! The rules are easy: post a pic somewhere of something you’ve made in the last week (ish; let’s say in the last month as the hard-and-fast) and tag it. Sit back and enjoy scrolling through all the beautiful things we’ve collectively created, and celebrate the fact that humans can be awesome!
I’ve been doing quite a bit of drawing for the Inklets recently, and it’s lots of fun. I’m okay with black and white drawings – this was always my strength in art at school, too – but colour? That’s another story.
But then I had this idea as I was falling asleep the other night about maybe approaching colour drawings in the same way as a black and white one. So I grabbed a picture of a rose to practice with, dug out my daughter’s extensive set of connector pens (kids’ markers, or “texters” in Australia) and rather a lot of paper, and went for it.
Basically, I had about 18 or so colours that I wanted to include, and using the guide picture I drew literally 18 versions of the rose with only one colour per piece. Here’s a snapshot of what some of the results look like:
That’s pretty much how I do the black ink drawings for the Inklets, right? Forget shape, or size, or form: just draw the black.
And I wondered: could I do the same thing with colour? Just draw the yellow. Just draw the pink. Just draw the dark pink. Just draw the highlights.
So I drew out each of the different layers, then scanned them into the computer and layered them up in Photoshop. Here’s the result:
It’s not amazing, but it’s passable, you know? I think there might be something to it as a technique if I practise (and probably use better markers, ha). But I do love drawing with markers, and this seems to be an easy way for my brain to process colour and blending and what not, so as a learning tool, it does the job.
Also, the rose looks better at a distance – when I looked at it on the screen from across the room, it really was quite pretty. Here’s a tiny version to simulate that:
😀
And here’s a version where I filled in that white in the background. Not sure it works, but it was worth trying.
And now, what have you made this week? Don’t forget to tag your contribution, or even better, leave a link in the comments!! I love seeing what inspiring things other people have made 🙂 🙂 🙂
