Woo hoo! My Q4 title for 2020 is official: it’s a flash fiction anthology called It All Changes Now, and it’ll be out in late November. Scroll to the end for the cover reveal and a question for you, or read on for more info…
“Flash fiction” means stories under 1500 words or under 1000 words depending on which definition you use; this anthology has sixteen stories that are each under 1200 words.
I had a HUGE blast putting this together. It was really liberating to be able to really play with writing, following ideas spontaneously in a way I’m not quite able to in a longer work.
I came up with a couple of new worlds too that I’m really interested in playing with some more – and if you get the anthology, you’ll see that there are three stories there all set in one of these new worlds, with fae and magical sentient dragon tattoos. Very shiny.
There are also two stories in the anthology which are part of the opening chapters of Witch Blue and I, Too, Have Teeth respectively, but told from a different character’s perspective.
Witch Blue you’ll have heard about if you’ve been here for any length of time: it’s the Myer-Briggs personality-based science fiction fantasy series, of which Moon Shot (my current work-in-progress) is a middle grade standalone prequel. (The main series will be adult, and set many hundreds of years in the future compared to Moon Shot. I also have a novelette written in this world, a sci fi heist story, that will likely be released late next year!)
I, Too, Have Teeth you won’t have heard about, but you can check out the Pinterest inspo board for it here to get a feel for the story. It’s a political fantasy epic about a new(ish) queen forced into war against two neighbouring countries, and it’s very Powerful Woman Will Smash You. It’s not scheduled for release – or even drafting – any time soon, but the first chapter’s been in my head for a few months and this version from an alternate point of view simply arrived one night, and it was a bunch of fun to write 🙂
Oh, I just realised that the lead story in the anthology is also set in the I, Too, Have Teeth world. What fun!
Okay, I promised a cover reveal. Here she is!
I am much pleased with it, not least because teal and magenta are kind of my favourite colours <3
Finally, a question for you. Feel free to answer in the comments, or you can drop me an email or share your answer with me on any of the The Socials.
Question: How do you feel about introductions to stories in an anthology? Do you like a brief lil blurb from the author about how the story came to be (like the Making Ofs in the Inklets, if you’ve read any of those), or do you prefer your anthologies neat, with only the stories? Let me know! I’d love to hear your opinion.
