Coming March 17: Trust Issues

Years ago, when I was on maternity leave before I had my daughter, I wrote half a book. It was fun. It was a mess, and I skipped from the first third of the book straight to the last third, as I was wont to do in those days, but it was a FUN mess.

The book was called Secret Breaker, and it’s about Becca, who has the ability to sense when people are lying, and to passively glean/hear anything that they are actively trying to keep secret at that moment in time. The story has shapeshifters and fae, bad guys and betrayals, magical tattoos and [spoiler] ley lines. It’s a Very Fun Book, the first in a planned series of six.

I’ve tried twice since then to rework the book into something presentable, (it was #SkeritNovel on twitter at one point) and both times it hasn’t quite gelled. I think part of this was Becca’s profession; I circled around a couple of different options and none of them quite gave the story the impetus it needed.

So the series languished for a bit – until last year, when I picked up a short story I’d started writing in this world. I’d gotten maybe a third of the way through (“For you. From D” <– You’ll know this line when you see it.) and stalled because Figuring Out What Came Next Was Hard.

But last year, I got it. I sat down, I finished the story, and it was also fun, and also good.

So here we are, in 2020, finally releasing something in the Secret Breakers world. Rest assured, the novels will follow eventually, AND you can read this short story as a complete standalone (ideally, it would be read between books 1 and 2).

It is a teensy bit spoilery for the eventual book 1 of the series, though đŸ˜‰

The only reason Becca agree to this date? Her sister threatened her with a never-ending parade of suitors if she refused.

Becca dreads the night of forced chit-chat with the one man she wants to see less than anyone else in the world. And to make matters worse, he turns up for their date early.

At least she only promised one date.

If you love your urban fantasy with a strong pulse of romance, get ready to fall in love with Amy Laurens’ Secret Breakers world in this action-packed, richly imagined stand-alone.
